Making of glazes
Glazes are just as much a craft of their own as throwing on the wheel, and it's through them that ceramic pieces really come to life.
All glazes used for the objects shown on this website are composed by me (unless stated otherwise) — some made from scratch, others based on recipes from other potters.
Creating your own glazes offers the opportunity to decide which materials you want to use and to develop a formula that works for your specific conditions.
One of the most traditional materials for glazes is wood ash, which can be a wonderful way to incorporate local materials into your work. Since wood ash has different properties depending on the tree, it can result in different effects in the finished glaze, but can also require different base recipes.
